From 1st January 2021, the free movement of people and goods & services between the UK and the EU came to an end.

The UK voted to leave the EU on 23rd June 2016 however both sides agreed to a transition period keeping many things the same until 31st December 2020, allowing enough time to agree to the terms of a new trade deal

A deal was finally agreed on 24th December 2020 and there are new rules in place for how the UK and EU live, work, trade and travel together.

The most important differences are in the following areas:

  • European travel rules
  • Duty-free shopping
  • UK citizens wanting to move to the EU
  • EU citizens in the UK
  • UK immigration system
  • Buying from and selling to the EU
  • Northern Ireland becomes an exception

These differences are explained in detail at this link.
