CORONAVIRUS TESTING
CORONAVIRUS TESTING

Coronavirus Testing

Coronavirus testing is intended to find people with the virus and ensuring they self-isolate to avoid spreading it through the wider community. Testing people and then tracing the contacts of those infected is therefore vital to stop the disease from spreading.

You should take a free test if you have any one of these symptoms:

  • a fever
  • a new continuous cough
  • a loss of smell or taste

It is important you and your household self-isolate until you can get a test.

You may also be required to get tested if you’re due to enter hospital to have surgery or a procedure. This will be arranged by the hospital.

Separate arrangements are in place for care home residents and care home staff.

Who is eligible

You are only eligible for a free NHS test under the following circumstances:

  • you have symptoms
  • you have been asked to by your local council
  • you live in England and have been told to by your hospital
  • you are taking part in a government pilot project

You are NOT eligible for a free NHS test if:

  • you live with someone who has coronavirus
  • you have come into close contact with someone who has coronavirus
  • you have entered the UK from a high risk country
  • you are planning to leave the country
  • your employer or school has asked you to get a test

However, you can pay for a private test.
